History

Karimnagar silver filigree, also known as Vendi teega pani, is a centuries-old craft from Andhra Pradesh, thriving since the 19th century. Believed to have migrated from Elgandal, it was introduced by goldsmith Kadarla Ramayya. Artisans melt silver into wires, twist them into delicate jaali (trellis) patterns, and craft intricate designs inspired by nature, music, and geometry. This precise and elegant silver wirework supports many families and highlights Karimnagar’s rich artisanal legacy.

Raw Materials and Tools

Raw Materials: Pure silver, Navasagaram, Yerigaram (Reetha) seeds.

Tools: Iron tongs, crucible, boring machine, compass, brass brush, wire-drawing machine, Podi Sravanam.

Process

The making of Karimnagar silver filigree starts with sketching a design. Silver is melted into rods, thinned with a boring machine, and drawn into fine wires. These are twisted into patterns, shaped using tools like Podi Sravanam, and set into frames with motifs of flowers, birds, or geometry. The structure is welded, heated, and shaped, then polished with Reetha water and a brass brush to remove residue. Finally, it’s buffed with cotton for a lasting shine.

Design and Color

The intricate designs of Karimnagar silver filigree are inspired by traditional and natural elements. Motifs often depict flora and fauna—flowers, leaves, vines—and birds like peacocks. Other designs feature cultural and historical themes such as chariots and religious patterns. These delicate, handcrafted motifs add elegance and uniqueness to each piece, highlighting the skill and creativity of the artisans.

Product Range

Karimnagar silver filigree offers a diverse range of handcrafted items, from jewelry like earrings, bangles, and pendants to idols of deities. Artisans also create puja items, decorative pieces, ladies’ bags, trays, photo frames, and boxes for spices, betel nuts, and paan. Utility items like lamp stands, ittardaans, and rose water sprinklers showcase the craft’s versatility and elegance.
