Brass Broidered Coconut Shell Crafts

Bone, Horn & Shell Crafts

Kerala GI Miscellaneous

History

Traditionally, coconut farmers repurposed discarded shells into household items after extracting copra. Kerala’s Vishwakarma artisans, renowned for wood and ivory craftsmanship, are believed to have pioneered this unique craft. Over time, it spread across the state, with artisans in Kollam, Ernakulam, Wayanad, and Kozhikode creating elegant and functional pieces. Today, coconut shell craft blends tradition with innovation, using techniques like brass inlay to transform natural waste into art, sustaining Kerala’s heritage while promoting eco-friendly practices.

Raw Materials and Tools

Brass-broidered coconut shell crafts use coconut shells, molten copper, zinc, beeswax, charcoal, clay, chalk, and paddy husk. Boot polish and French polish add a glossy finish, while sealing-wax paste enhances shine. Essential tools include chisels for smoothing, steel rubbers for refining the shell, and screws for attaching handles and bases. Wooden models, lead squares, and clay molds shape metal embellishments, while polishing cloths ensure precision and refinement in every crafted piece.

Process

Artisans prepare and shape coconut shells, then create metal detailing using molten copper and zinc. Beeswax, charcoal, clay, chalk, and paddy husk aid in stabilizing, filling, and finishing. After assembly with screws and fittings, surfaces are refined with chisels and steel rubbers. Finally, boot polish, French polish, and sealing-wax paste are applied for durable gloss and definition, followed by careful hand-polishing for an even finish.

Design and Color

Floral, geometric, and nature-inspired carvings are most prominent; birds—especially eagles—are common motifs. Visual appeal comes from the contrast between warm brass and the deep, natural tone of the shell. Being organic, coconut shell is remarkably adaptable and strong; despite lower cellulose and higher lignin, its composition is comparable to hardwoods, making it suitable for long-term use.
