Raw Materials and Tools
Cheriyal painting uses rice starch, tamarind seed paste, tree gum, and clay to prepare the canvas. Natural pigments like red (ingilikam), yellow (arddulam), white, indigo, and black are derived from stones, oil lamp ash, and seashells. Tools include a sander for mixing materials, graphite for outlining, and fine brushes for intricate details. These traditional materials and techniques preserve the authenticity of this narrative art form.
Process
Cheriyal scroll painting starts with preparing a khadi cloth canvas coated with a paste of rice starch, tamarind seed paste, tree gum, and matti. This mixture is applied in three layers, allowing drying between each. Artists use labhi paste (tamarind seed paste and adhesive) with natural pigments like red (ingilikam), yellow (arddulam), indigo, and black. The background is painted red, and outlines are drawn in graphite. This meticulous process preserves the art's cultural authenticity.
