History

Gond art, rooted in the lush Gondwana region of Madhya Pradesh, reflects the tribal community’s deep respect for nature. Traditionally practiced by women, it includes bhittichitra (mural-like paintings) and digna (geometric patterns). Created with natural pigments, Gond paintings celebrate local events and honor deities like Marahi Devi. Over time, this art form has embraced contemporary themes while preserving its dynamic storytelling, making it a versatile and evolving tradition.

Raw Materials and Tools

Gond art relies on natural pigments sourced from clay, stones, flowers, and herbs. Tools vary by region—chiteras in Bundelkhand use fingers for linear designs on mud walls, while Malwa, Nimar, and Tanwarghar artists create mandana patterns on red mud and cow dung bases, detailing with white pigment. The use of simple tools like fingers and basic brushes highlights the art’s organic connection to nature and regional traditions.

Process

Gond art employs natural pigments from clay, stones, flowers, and herbs, with distinct regional styles in Madhya Pradesh. In Bundelkhand, chiteras practice lipai, using fingers to create linear designs on mud-plastered surfaces. Malwa, Nimar, and Tanwarghar artisans create mandana, depicting auspicious geometric symbols like swastik and chowk on red mud and cow dung bases, adorned with white pigment. These traditional techniques highlight the deep cultural and spiritual significance of Gond art.

Design and Color

Gond art themes revolve around myths, legends, festivals, ceremonies, nature, seasons, and daily life. Its signature motifs feature interwoven figures and intricate patterns, often repeating a single design across the composition. Artists use four main styles: dotted lines resembling fading sunrays, black ink patterns mimicking tree bark, colored dots inspired by sparks from striking flint stones, and half-moon circles. These stylistic elements reflect the deep connection between Gond artists and their natural surroundings.
