History

Indian miniatures are highly detailed, small-scale paintings practiced since at least the ninth century CE. Initially painted on cloth or dried palm leaf manuscripts, they expanded in size by the 12th century with the introduction of paper. Influenced by Persian and Mamluk styles, they adopted bold colors, intricate borders, and materials like gold, silver, and ultramarine blue.

Raw Materials and Tools

The raw materials for Indian miniature paintings include handmade Basli paper from Sanganer, starch for adhesion, and a Gond-Khadiya mixture to prepare the surface. Natural pigments are used for coloring, while butter paper and an oval stone provide a smooth finish. Essential tools include pencils for sketching and fine squirrel-hair brushes for detailing.

Process

Indian miniature paintings are made on handmade paper, often from Sanganer. Basli paper is created by layering thin sheets with starch. A paste of Gond and Khadiya is prepared, sieved, dried, and applied for a smooth surface. Artists sketch with pencils, add base colors, and detail using fine squirrel-hair brushes. Finally, butter paper and an oval stone are used to polish the painting for a refined, smooth finish.

Design and Color

Indian miniatures are renowned for the high degree of detail achieved within a small canvas, as well as the distinct sensitivity with which natural, human, and divine forms are depicted. They portray a wide range of subjects, including myths and legends, human suffering and passions, ambitions, and physicality. Indian miniatures exhibit a range of styles and themes, from the religious to the secular.
