History

Tripura has a rich legacy of bamboo crafts that date back to ancient times. Bamboo plays an essential role in the daily lives of the people, from birth to death. The craft reflects a blend of cultures, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. Bamboo jewellery, a newer expression of this heritage, has evolved with fashion demands. It combines traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, making it popular across India and international markets alike.

Raw Materials and Tools

Mature bamboo (3–4 years old) is the primary material. Tools include a hacksaw, sickle, sandpaper, slotted shaping tool, pliers, and dye containers. Materials like boiling water, dyes, glue, beads, stones, and metal wires help artisans craft eco-friendly, lightweight, and stylish accessories.

Process

Bamboo is first cut into manageable pieces using a hacksaw, then sliced into thin strips with a sickle. These strips are dyed in boiling water mixed with colors and left to dry in sunlight. Once dry, the strips are shaped or spiraled as per the design. The ends are glued and smoothed with sandpaper. Decorative beads and stones are added, and metal hooks or wires are inserted in the jewellery.

Design and Color

Bamboo jewellery combines traditional motifs with modern trends, featuring earthy textures enhanced by vibrant dyes in red, blue, green, and yellow. Lightweight and bold, its geometric, floral, and abstract designs appeal to eco-conscious, fashion-forward individuals seeking handcrafted artistry.

Product Range

The product range features bamboo accessories like earrings, bangles, necklaces, bracelets, and rings. Earrings vary in shape and color, with some using beads or stones. Bangles and bracelets show layered detailing, while necklaces blend bamboo with metal or thread. Stylish, affordable, and versatile for any occasion.
