History

Amroha is a quaint town located in North West Uttar Pradesh, near Moradabad. The name “Amroha” is derived from “Aam,” meaning mango, and “Ruha,” which refers to a type of fish that is plentiful in the area. This small town is primarily known for its production of dholaks and tablas.

Process

They utilize wood from mango and sheesham trees to carve various sizes and shapes of hollow blocks, which are subsequently covered with animal skin, primarily goatskin, to form the instrument. The artisans primarily use locally made hand tools, while machines are employed to smooth the outer surface. Before the shells are sealed with animal hide, women paint them at home.
