History

A traditional method for creating clothing, daraz ka kaam was especially popular in Lucknow during the Nawabi era. It served as a means of incorporating Nawabi sophistication and elegance into apparel.

Raw Materials and Tools

Daraz-ka-kaam uses fine muslin fabric, cotton threads, needles, and scissors. Additional materials include small muslin cutouts for appliqué work and starch for fabric stiffening.

Process

Daraz-ka-kaam creates a decorative, see-through effect by joining two fabric pieces with nearly invisible stitches hidden in the fissure (daraz). This intricate handwork involves seam joining, edge finishing, and appliquéing muslin cutouts in various shapes between or on the fabric layers. Fine stitches outline these shapes, enhancing the design. When held against light, the delicate craftsmanship becomes visible, showcasing the precision and artistry involved in this traditional technique.

Design and Color

The technique’s decorative element is enhanced by motifs such as patti daraz (leaves), macchli daraz (fish), and phool daraz (flowers) used to join the seams.

Product Range

Daraz-ka-kaam is used to create exquisite garments like sarees, dupattas, kurta sets, and lehengas. It also adorns home furnishings such as curtains, cushion covers, table linens, and bedspreads, showcasing intricate craftsmanship.
