History
Longpi black pottery, crafted by the Tangkhul tribe in Manipur, traces its origins to the Neolithic period. This unique craft, practiced in Longpi Khullen and Longpi Kajui villages, has been passed down through generations. Traditionally made for local use, Longpi pottery is now internationally recognized for its durability and aesthetic appeal. Cooking in these pots is believed to enhance the flavor of food, increasing its popularity.
Raw Materials and Tools
Longpi pottery is crafted from a mixture of black serpentine stone and special brown clay, both found in Longpi village. No potter’s wheel is used; instead, pots are manually shaped. Essential tools include wooden paddles for shaping, polishing stones for a smooth finish, and leaves from local trees to enhance the pottery’s shine after firing. The process is labor-intensive and requires precision.
Process
The pottery is made by blending ground black stone and clay, then hand-moulding it into shape. After drying, it is fired in a bonfire, where reduction firing gives it a distinctive black color. While still hot, the surface is polished with a local tree leaf to achieve a natural sheen. This method, requiring no potter’s wheel, results in durable, functional, and decorative pieces.
Design and Color
Longpi pottery is distinguished by its deep black color and metallic sheen, achieved through traditional firing techniques. The designs are minimalistic, often featuring smooth surfaces and curved edges. Some pieces include cane or woven handles, adding texture. The pottery’s aesthetic is rustic yet elegant, making it suitable for modern and traditional settings. Its natural black finish makes it unique among Indian pottery.
Product Range
Longpi pottery includes both functional and decorative items. Products range from cooking pots, kettles, and bowls to tea sets, vases, and trays. The cookware is popular for its heat retention and health benefits. Contemporary adaptations include stylish plates, mugs, and home décor items, expanding its appeal to global markets.
