Glazed Pottery
Terracotta & Pottery works
History
Glazed pottery in India has a rich history, dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization (c. 2500 BCE). It evolved through various dynasties, with notable Persian and Mughal influences, and developed distinctive regional styles across Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Kashmir.
Raw Materials and Tools
Key materials include clay, mineral glazes, and water. Common tools are the potter’s wheel, moulds, trimming tools, and kilns for biscuit and glaze firing.
Process
Forms are shaped on the wheel or in moulds, dried to leather-hard, refined, and bisque-fired. Glaze is applied by dipping, pouring, or spraying, then glaze-fired to fuse a durable, often vitreous, surface.
Design and Color
Motifs include geometric repeats, floral arabesques, and figurative panels. Palettes often feature blues, greens, ambers, yellows, and iron reds—achieved through varied glaze recipes and firing atmospheres.
Product Range
Decorative pots, vases, tableware, tiles, and architectural elements showcase the craft’s utility and aesthetic range.
