Thongjao Pottery
Terracotta and Pottery Works
History
Thongjao pottery, originating from Manipur, has been a vital craft for over 500 years. It was developed during King Garip Niwas’s reign to produce clay vessels for salt extraction. Women primarily craft the pottery, passing down techniques through generations. Thongjao pottery is unique for its red burnished finish, created without a wheel. Today, both men and women participate, and adaptations such as decorative items and painted pottery are being made.
