History
Kalpi's handmade paper industry flourished during India's Independence Movement, driven by Gandhi's Swadeshi Movement. Known for its ancient papermaking tradition, Kalpi produced paper from waste materials. Strategically located near the Yamuna River and Indian Midbank Railway, Kalpi facilitated trade in goods like grain and cotton. The Betwa Canal provided irrigation, supporting local industries like papermaking.
Raw Materials and Tools
Kalpi handmade paper uses raw materials like cotton rags, jute, banana fibers, and agricultural waste. Essential tools include a deckle and mold for sheet formation, and manual tools for pulping. The process involves soaking and beating materials into a fine paste, then drying and finishing the sheets through pressing, cutting, and natural dyeing to add aesthetic value.
Process
This paper is made by hand with a deckle and mold. The deckle is a level frame intended to catch excess wet pulp and cover the mold, whereas the mold is a frame covered with a flexible, stiff, or flat screen. With or without sizing, the procedure entails manually lifting cellulose fibers, sheet by sheet, on molds suspended in a fiber-water mixture. As a result, the handmade paper is bound together by an interwoven layer. Typically, cotton, silk, and agricultural waste like sugarcane, bark, or jute waste are used to make handmade paper.
Design and Color
Natural dyes from plants, flowers, and fruits produce earthy tones, while synthetic dyes create brighter shades. Traditional practices favor natural colors. Organic materials like flower petals and leaves are added to the pulp, enhancing texture and visual appeal. These inclusions create unique decorative effects, preserving the authenticity of handmade paper while adding artistic value to the final product.
