Agra Marble Inlay

Stone Inlay

Uttar Pradesh Stone

History

Pietra-dura, meaning “hard stone” in Italian, began in 16th-century Rome and flourished in Florence, often featuring birds and floral motifs. Introduced to India via Mughal patronage, it evolved into Parchin Kari, gaining prominence under Shah Jahan in the Taj Mahal and Itimad-ud-Daulah’s tomb. This intricate technique inlays colored marbles or semi-precious stones into stone bases with such precision that patterns appear seamless, reflecting the exceptional artistry of Mughal craftsmanship.

Raw Materials and Tools

White Makrana marble, prized for its softness and durability, is the primary material for inlay work. Tools like compasses, saws, and abrasive stones prepare the surface. Chisels (Tankiya, Narzi), drills, and buffers assist in engraving, gemstone placement, and polishing. Saan and Kamaani tools, along with emery wheels, shape intricate patterns. Hand-held chisels groove the marble, and specialized glue secures gemstones with precision, reflecting skilled craftsmanship in every detail.

Process

Inlay work starts with cutting marble into desired shapes using a compass and saw. After filing and drilling, a design is sketched on a poster-colored surface. Master artisans engrave the pattern, and lapidary artists cut colored stones into precise floral shapes. Stones are inlaid into engraved cavities with Elalite glue. The surface is scrubbed, then buffed to a smooth finish, and finally inspected by the Ustad for quality.

Design and Color

Parchin Kari features geometric, floral, and arabesque motifs, often paired with Islamic calligraphy. Geometric designs symbolize infinity, while floral patterns reflect the Mughal idea of paradise. Arabesques use mirrored, natural elements like curved leaves. Calligraphy highlights the cultural value of the written word. Originating from mosaic art, this technique uses semi-precious stones in Mughal monuments. Islamic art avoids figural depictions, favoring abstract beauty and intricate, colorful inlay combinations.
