Hand Block Printing
Hand block printing is a traditional textile art that involves stamping designs onto fabric using intricately carved wooden blocks. This meticulous craft has been practiced for centuries across various cultures, notably in India, where it has evolved into a rich tapestry of regional styles and techniques.
The origins of block printing trace back to ancient China during the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD), from where it disseminated to other parts of Asia, including India. In India, evidence suggests that block printing has been practiced since at least the 12th century, with some sources indicating the technique is over 2,000 years old.
The Mughal Empire (1526–1857) significantly influenced the art form, introducing intricate floral patterns symbolizing paradise, which remain prevalent in contemporary designs.
